What a glass table top is used for
Any shape, cut from a template or your measurements. Send us a tracing and we will work from it.
It does two jobs at once: it shields the surface underneath from scratches, heat and spills, and it gives the piece a clear, level, easy-clean finish.
Glass table tops for dining tables
Round, oval, square or rectangular. Choosing a glass table top for dining table use comes down to thickness, shape and edge finish.
Coffee, side and console tops
Small tops that take constant contact, with the grain or base design still showing through.
Glass desk tops
Turn timber, laminate or joinery into a wipeable work surface, cut around cable ports and fixed uprights.
Glass for vanity tops
In bathrooms, powder rooms and dressers, glass for vanity tops shrugs off water, cosmetics and styling-tool heat.
Outdoor settings
Toughened tops for covered outdoor tables and bar carts, finished on every edge.
Protective toppers
Over an antique or a new hardwood surface, the glass takes the wear instead of the timber.
Shapes, sizes and templates
Because we cut in our own factory, the shape is up to you.
Maximum sheet size is 2440mm x 1830mm, minimum is 50mm x 50mm, and every piece is cut to a tolerance of ±1mm. If a top is larger than a single sheet we will tell you at quote, not after the order.
- Rectangular and square: cut to your two measurements.
- Round: round glass for dining table tops, pedestal tables and side tables, cut to your diameter.
- Oval and curved: cut from a template so the curve follows the base.
- Custom: radiused corners, notches and cutouts for umbrella holes, cable ports and fixed legs.
Thickness, and when to choose toughened
Tabletops are cut in 5mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm. Thinner glass suits a protective layer on a solid surface, where the furniture carries the load. Thicker glass suits a top spanning a frame or base, and reads as more substantial at the edge.
We recommend toughened safety glass as standard. It is heat treated, about five times stronger than standard glass, breaks into small blunt fragments rather than shards, and meets AS 1288. It cannot be cut or drilled once toughened, so every measurement has to be right first. That is why we template rather than guess.
Edge finishes
The edge is the part people see and touch. All three are finished in-house.
Polished
Smooth and clear, our most popular finish. A bright clean line, best where the edge is on show.
Beveled
An angled edge that refracts light into a decorative border. Suits traditional furniture and vanities.
Ground
A plain smooth finish, not polished clear. Best where the edge sits under a lip or out of sight.
How to measure and template
- Work in millimetres. For a rectangle, measure length and width at both ends, as older furniture is rarely square.
- For a round top, measure the diameter at the widest point, then at two other angles. If the readings differ, template it instead.
- Decide on the overhang: flush with the edge below, inside it, or over it.
- Template anything shaped onto cardboard or builder's paper, or let us do it. Free measure and quote across Melbourne.
Protective tops and standalone tops
A protective top sits over an existing surface. The furniture carries the weight, the glass takes the punishment, and the piece underneath stays as it is. That is the usual choice for antiques, heirloom tables, desks and vanities.
A standalone top is the surface itself, held by a base or frame with nothing solid beneath it. These need more thought about thickness and support points, so send a photo of the base with your sizes.
Care and cleaning
Warm water, mild detergent and a soft cloth keep glass clear, finished with a dry microfibre cloth to avoid streaks. Avoid abrasive pads and gritty cleaners, which dull the surface over time. Wipe spills before they dry on, and use trivets under hot cookware. Small clear buffers under a protective top stop it sliding and let a little air move underneath.

Glass table top questions
Can you cut round glass for a dining table?
Yes. Round glass for dining table tops is one of the jobs we cut most often, along with ovals and custom curves. Send us the diameter, or we can template on site.
How thick should the glass be?
Tabletops are cut in 5mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm. A protective layer over solid timber can be thinner, while a top spanning a frame usually calls for more. We recommend a thickness at quote.
Is toughened glass necessary?
We recommend it for any table top. It is about five times stronger than standard glass, breaks into small blunt fragments and meets AS 1288. It cannot be cut once toughened, so measurements matter.
Can you protect my existing timber table?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people call. A clear top guards against scratches, heat marks, water rings and spills while leaving the timber fully visible.
Do you cut desk and vanity tops too?
Yes, the same way as a dining top, with your choice of thickness and edge finish, plus notches or cutouts for cable ports, taps and fixed fittings.
What is the largest top you can cut?
Up to 2440mm x 1830mm, down to 50mm x 50mm, cut to a tolerance of ±1mm. If your table is bigger than a single sheet, talk to us about the options.
Do you deliver across Melbourne?
Yes. Our factory is in Dandenong South and we supply glass table tops Melbourne wide, for pickup, delivery or installation, all covered by our lifetime guarantee.

Every top is cut and edged in our own Dandenong South factory.
